THE KARATE KID (REMAKE)

Now I have to admit I was pretty skeptical when I first heard that they were going to remake The Karate Kid. I mean how can you mess with a classic like the original right? Anyway, the film is set to come out this June and stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (son of Will Smith). Now like I said, I was a bit skeptical but after seeing the new trailer for this film I can honestly say that SAXOMAN will definitely go check it out. Anyway, check out the trailer for this film and judge for yourself.

SUEDE SHOES AND PIMP SOCKS

Back in Junior High School several of my friends had started wearing black suede shoes that kind of looked like Wingtips. They would wear these shoes with the sheer, black nylon "Pimp socks". So what happened next? You guessed it! SAXOMAN bought himself some black suede shoes and some sheer black pimp socks as well. Hey, I had to follow the crowd right? Now some of my friends would wear these shoes with jeans or slacks. I didn't have any slacks and I just didn't think these shoes went well with jeans. The pimp socks also didn't look good on me with my, uh....pale skin shall we say. I even tried these sheer socks with black socks underneath and they did look a little better. So what happened? Well I can tell you that SAXOMAN never had the nerve to wear these things in public and they sat in my closet for quite a while. I eventually ended up giving (probably selling) these to my older brother who went through a phase and wore this stuff. Now I remember when someone would accidentally step on these shoes that my friends wore and my friends would either punch the guy or even worse, make him brush them off. Jeez....the humiliation. HAHA! Oh well.....

SLAPPIN' BONES

Now when I was younger I can tell you that I spent many an hour slappin' bones, that's playing dominoes for the un-hip. We didn't have these fancy video games that kids have nowadays, or computers, cell phones, iPods, etc. We would just find simple things to keep us occupied. So with some Schlitz Malt liquor and a set of bones, we would spend countless hour playing this game. Now slappin' bones is a game of skill and is known throughout the world. The are some countries that play bones with just the two ends but here in America we play off all four sides of the spinner. Shouts of "Fideen" (fifteen), "Nick the Greek" (five) and "Dime Time" (ten) were just some of the many ways you shouted out as you scored your points. Sometimes people would get so excited and slap the bones down so hard that it would make a mess of all the other dominoes on the table. HAHA! Anyway, just so you all know there is more to dominoes than standing them up and watching them all fall down.

HEY, IT'S 5:30AM AND IT'S SUNDAY

5:30AM! What? Yes, that's the time my cats wake me up on each and every weekend. Now I know that during the week I get up at an ungodly hour (5:00AM) but this is the weekend already and I wanna sleep! I look forward to sleeping in on the weekends and think that sleep is one of the great joys of life (next to eating). Like clockwork every weekend my cats will start making a bunch of noise or several other tactics to make me get up so I can feed them. So like an idiot I get up, feed them, and then let the other one outdoors. Then I can finally go back to sleep. Jeez.....darn cats!

A 42 INCH PIZZA, OH YEAH....

I was watching Man vs Food earlier tonight and happened to catch the episode of a 42 inch pizza in San Antonio, TX. Now lemme tell you, this pizza is a 30 pound feast of pure heaven! Watching this made me want to go out a order an extra large pizza! Now this wasn't one of the challenges where the host had to eat the entire pizza but I thought it was still a sight to behold. Anyway, check out the video of this 42 inch masterpiece!

TIME FOR A TRIP TO AMOEBA

It had been quite a while since I last visited my favorite cd store, Amoeba Music, so I had it all planned out. I decided I would stop by my job on Saturday because we get real busy at the end of the month. I would make a cameo appearance and let all the bosses see me and think "WOW, SAXOMAN is really dedicated to his job showing up on a Saturday" So I show up around 9:30, make sure all the bosses see me and then about an hour later I'm out the door! HAHA! From there it was a short drive over to Amoeba where I was lucky to find a parking spot. Once inside it is like music overload! I am just overwhelmed by the sites and sounds around me. It makes me want to pass out! HAHA! Anyway, I grab a basket and head over to the Soul section, then hit the Reggae section, the Latin section and of course the Jazz section. Should I go upstairs and check out the dvd's? Naw, I better not! I had a ton of stuff in my basket by the time I was all done. Now normally I go through my basket and try to weed through the stack of stuff to a more manageable (and affordable) pile. This time? No way! I'm taking it all! I left out of there with about 15 cd's and an afternoon of doing absolutely nothing but laying on the sofa and listening to music! What a life!

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY - YES, IT'S TRUE

Yes, today is the day. The One Year Anniversary of the SAXOMAN blog. It's hard to believe that a year has passed us by already. With over 260 blog entries to date, SAXOMAN is still going strong. Who would have thought that I would have so much to say about nothing! HAHA! Anyway, thanks to my many (2? 3?) readers and my 4 followers. Hopefully you will all make this blog part of your daily ritual like your morning newspaper or morning coffee. What's to come? Well I can tell you that there is still an endless supply of interesting topics to blog about. Things like my Academy Award picks, my screenplay (yeah, whatever happened with that?), pimp socks and suede shoes, gossip, commuting, my life stories, and of course, more music and movie picks to keep you up to date and somewhat hip. Thanks again to all!

DVD PICK OF THE WEEK - 14 BLADES

This weeks DVD Pick of the Week is the new Chinese film titled 14 Blades with legendary action man, Donny Yen. This is an action packed film all you Asian cinema fans are sure to enjoy. There's even a love story weaved in there for those that crave a little romance. Check out the extended trailer for this action adventure! My only complaint? Not with the movie but with the bootleg copy I picked up in Chinatown this past weekend for $5. It isn't very good picture quality (which rarely happens) and my copy is also in stereo instead of Dolby surround sound. Oh well......it's what I get for trying to save a buck. Other than that another fine film and SAXOMAN recommended.

HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY FOR THAT?

Now there is something that I find really annoying. What I find annoying (and rude) is when people ask me "how much did you pay for that?" Now I don't know if people are genuinely curious about the price I paid or if they are just plain nosey. I really think they're just being nosey. Now some people have no problem asking how much I paid for my house, car, TV, or any number of other things. What's next? Asking me how much money I make? I really don't think this is anybody's business and I wouldn't dare ask people this question. If people want to tell me how much they paid for something that's fine, but I ain't gonna ask. So the next time any of you ask SAXOMAN this question.......well I'll just let the picture of Homer be my response. HAHA!

THE NBA ALL STAR GAME AND VALENTINES DAY

OK, now I don't know who the NBA scheduling genius is but you don't schedule the NBA All Star game on Valentines Day! How are you supposed to take care of your husbandly duties of wining, dining and being romantic when there's a game on that you have to see? Now the only good thing they did is schedule this game later than normal (5:00PM). So......I have spent my entire weekend doing my husbandly duties and being Mr. Romantico and now it's time to kick back and watch the game. HAHA!

FACEBOOK? NOT FOR SAXOMAN

Now I have to admit that up until recently SAXOMAN had a Facebook account. I'm really not sure why I had an account because I rarely used it. In the beginning I did hook up with several friends which were ex-co-workers or ex-classmates. I never posted any personal info about myself on my Facebook page and the only photo of me was actually a photo of Japanese Homer (aka Mr. Sparkle). Now I personally don't get people that post all of their private info on Facebook for all the world to see. Sorry but it doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe I'm just out of touch with today's world or maybe I'm just a private person. I dunno.... Now the reason I have recently closed my account is due to all of the irrelevant nonsense that people would post on Facebook. Now I'm sorry and I hope I don't offend my few (3? 4?) readers but I don't really care if your getting sleepy and going to bed nor do I care that you're snuggling with your honey-bunny! PLEASE! Anyway, it just didn't seem like Facebook was useful or worth my time. Hmmm......maybe that's what all of you are thinking about my blog, a bunch of irrelevant nonsense. HAHA!

REGGAE CD PICK OF THE WEEK - NASIO

This weeks Reggae CD Pick of the Week is by Nasio and is titled Living In The Positive. Now Nasio doesn't have very many cd's out but the two that I have are both very good in my book. Now you may notice Nasio's vocal style and voice are very, very similar to the late great Bob Marley. Judge for yourselves. Anyway, a great cd throughout that you are sure to enjoy! Not hip to Nasio? Well check out one of the many great cuts from this cd titled African Spirit.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK - ONE TIGHT SQUEEZE

Recently the wife and I were vacationing in Costa Rica. On one of our many bus rides across the country we were typically squeezed in pretty tight, or so I thought. When I saw the bus in front of us (see photo) I can definitely say they had us beat as to how tight they could squeeze people into a bus. HAHA!
