JAZZ OBOE - YUSEF LATEEF

Something that you rarely see is the oboe being used to play jazz or blues. Here is a clip of the great Yusef Lateef from 1963 playing a blues on the oboe. Yusef was a monster on the tenor sax, flute and oboe and did not get the recognition that I feel he deserved. Yusef had a brief stint with Cannonball Adderley's group and this video is from that time frame.
Enjoy the sounds of Yusef Lateef!

  1. Oh Yea Yusef! Don't you just love the blues! Cannonball brings it with this band. BRD here checking in Saxoman. A classic Multi reed master, Yusef did one of my favorite tunes - Love Theme from Spartacus. Like Rahsaan Roland Kirk, you can hear some mixture of eastern sounds with a little Hard Bop Detroit mixed in. Keep 'um coming!

  2. Sounds like you know your stuff there BRD. The eastern flavor that Yusef always mixed in his music was too hip! Glad to know someone else is diggin' on and hip to Yusef.
